The distance from Dong Hoi City to Phong Nha Cave is approximately 47 km. Traveling by private car typically takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour to reach the Phong Nha Cave area. However, the actual travel time may vary based on traffic conditions and the location of your accommodation.

In The Morning
Phong Nha Cave is the first stop on the full-day Phong Nha Cave and Dark Cave Tour. We will begin by taking a boat ride along the picturesque Son River to reach the cave entrance. After 25 minutes of enjoying the scenic views on both sides of the river, we will arrive at the cave, where we will spend a few hours exploring the interior.
Phong Nha Cave is renowned as one of the most beautiful caves in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. Inside the cave, there is an underground river that stretches nearly 14 km in length. Additionally, the cave features many stunning stalactites that have formed over millions of years, resembling shapes such as lions, thrones, and Buddhas.
At noon, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Phong Nha Village and take a short rest before continuing our afternoon exploration.

Continuing our tour, we will head to Dark Cave. First, visitors will be fully equipped with protective gear and headlamps. Next, you will watch a video tutorial to prepare for exploring Dark Cave. After completing these two steps, we will begin the afternoon schedule of the Phong Nha Cave and Dark Cave tour.
The adventure starts with an exhilarating zipline ride across the Chay River to reach Dark Cave. This experience provides stunning views of the poetic Chay River and its remarkably clear blue waters. Moreover, guests can take in the breathtaking natural surroundings from a unique perspective.
Upon arriving at the Dark Cave area, you have two options for reaching the cave entrance: you can either walk a short distance or swim in the refreshing, crystal-clear river.
As we explore the mysterious Dark Cave, we will utilize our pre-equipped flashlights to navigate further inside. When we arrive at the meeting point, visitors will need to remove their life jackets to continue the tour.
Dark Cave gets its name from the black basalt formations that give its interior a pitch-black appearance. The headlamps will allow us to admire the impressive stalactites on the cave’s ceiling. As we move deeper into the cave, the path becomes more narrow and slippery, so it’s important for everyone to proceed with caution.
At the end of the cave, we will encounter a natural mud lake, perfect for mud bathing. Many visitors enjoy this experience as it’s beneficial for the skin. Interestingly, when you apply the mud all over your body, you will naturally float on the surface—a unique experience you won’t want to miss.
After leaving Dark Cave, we will kayak along the Chay River to continue discovering the area’s natural wonders. This fun activity lets you take in the beautiful scenery before the tour concludes.

Travel Tips
- Visitors are advised to bring a hat and apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn while traveling to the two caves.
- Additionally, it is recommended to wear shoes with a good grip for easier movement inside the caves.
- Make sure to pack a swimsuit or bikini along with extra clothing to change into after swimming and mud bathing. Please note that mud bathing is permitted only if you are wearing a swimsuit or bikini.
- For safety reasons, this trip is not suitable for pregnant women. Moreover, children shorter than 1.4 meters are not allowed to participate in Zipline activities.
